Pendower possesses an example of one of the many submerged forests dating back around 3,000 years that can be found all over the South West.

While not as old as the one uncovered in 2014 at Mount’s Bay, which is estimated at between 4,000 to 6,000 years old, it is still a noteworthy and important feature of the beach.

Its existence indicates that relative sea levels have at times been many metres below current levels. On occasion, after winter storms the forest, containing many familiar species of trees: pine, oak, and hazel, is uncovered.
